The Preseason has officially ended for high sports. With the coming of Fall comes Friday Night Lights and Saturday Morning football games. Throughout the preseason one game was among the most anticipated for the season Rumson Fair-Haven versus Red Bank Catholic.
The RFH vs RBC rivalry is one of the longest running grudge matches in Monmouth County and the state of New Jersey. Both teams have produced great teams over the years but RBC has held the record for most wins and the longest-running streak of 12 years. Though the game is normally played on Thanksgiving Day the fans were still pumped-up for this highly anticipated game.
The game started with Red Bank Catholic receiving the ball that was returned by #15 Kevin Degnan. The Casey held the ball for some time until being forced to punt the ball to RFH. #10 quarterback Collin Coles put the ball in motion to gain a few yards but both teams were met at a standstill as RFH then had to punt back to RBC.
Thi standstill didn’t last long as during the second quarter RFH’s #2 John Volker ran down Count Baise Field for a touchdown. RBC retaliated forcing the extra point to sway from the goal post.
This was the beginning of many touchdowns for the Bulldogs. The RFH defense held a strongly fortified front against the Caseys. By the time of the half, the score was 13-0.
Rumson Fair Haven continued their strength into the second half making the score 20-0 by the end of the 3rd quarter. RBC didn’t stand still as they broke away from their zero point score to take down the field for two good touchdowns. The final score was 20-14 with RFH taking down the long raining champions.
Volker enthusiastically said, “We think this game is only the beginning of the wins for the season”. He also mentioned ” we were not sure we were going to win, but now that we have it’s going to be a strong season.
RBC’s next game is set against Manasquan while RFH will be running with Wall.
The 2019 season is off to a wild start let’s see what more is to come.
